Zeze kingston’s time

Listen to this article

In every five event posters you come across, you are sure to find the name  Zeze Kingston appearing at least on three of them.

If you go to a club, you can be sure that in no time the sound system will be belting out one of Zeze Kingston’s tunes. Such is the vibe that the trending artist has ignited.

In part, his rise can be credited to the Amapiano tune that he has perfectly localised.

The Alamu Anu star says his stay in South Africa hooked him into an evolution spurred by the genre he considers more of a lifestyle.

“It is more than a genre. It is a lifestyle. I was surrounded by that sound, the lifestyle and everything that happens around it. That is how I was motivated to start doing Amapiano music. I have seen Amapiano change people’s life. It has also changed mine and that’s why I am loyal to the sound,” said Zeze Kingston.

Having the Dare Devilz duo of Marcus and GD Pasanje as uncles, music was a preoccupation which was almost inevitable for Zeze Kingston, who was born Robert Ching’amba. He said the two exposed him to the art and he eventually ended producing music for artists such as Blak Jak, Gwamba and Onesimus.

It has been a long road for the 30-year-old artist to reach such stardom. In his early days as a wannabe, he used to play the role of a backing vocalist for established names such as Piksy, Onesimus and Trumel.

He said: “I started recording when I was young. In 2018 I quit my job and relocated to South Africa. It was while I was there that I went into music full time. It was just the right thing for me to do.”

At the moment, Zeze Kingston has two extended playlists to his name. African Melody was released in 2020 and In My Zone released in December last year.

Though riding on the Amapiano genre which has its roots in South Africa, the artist says he is determined to make it big.

“It is the sound which has more attraction now. It is dominating the airwaves elsewhere. Mixing it with local elements makes it even better. It feels great to be in the position that I am. I am hard-working and I am different,” he said.

The artist said he is inspired by the events that happen around him.

Zeze Kingston said: “I learn from what happens around me. That has been my greatest inspiration. There are always the highs and lows in life. For me to get where I am today I have gone through that and it has helped to make me to be who I am.”

In a separate interview, member of the Dare Devilz duo GD Pasanje praised Zeze Kingston for his talent and perseverance.

“It has taken him years to get to where he is…it has been a slow but steady growth. He is patient and eager to learn plus he is a natural born star. You can tell from his charisma and how he interacts with people.”
